becoz im chronically outrunning the thoughts tm, when I'm away from my studies or on break, I usually find an month long or something to get my mind occupied with! This month...well really December to early january, lol i can't believe its 2024, I decided to make yet another fur head! The first one i made like, 9 or some odd months ago, was super pretty really..bad. Besides the free chickenwire (used as mesh for da eyes) that would come loose and occasionally poke me, the fur sewing and everything in general wasn't the best lol. I'd give past me an big A for effort cuz that was the first furhead I ever did!
first furhead i made! the image on the right is what i was attempting to recreate, lol.
okay, so like 9 or some months later! i was...am...still...on a werewolf/dog coded/canine kick! i mean, i'v always been dog coded. my personal fursona has changed throughout the years, but if u were to take a time machine and go to like 6 or 7 year old me and ask me animal I would want to be, I would say wolf in an instant. So with that thought in mind, I was already planning on doing a project to keep my mind and hands busy, so I figured, hey! maybe i can do a better fursuit this time! lets make my wolf dog. canine. thang. real!
I say wolf dog canine thing cuz it has like, wolf patterns, but wolves dont have floppy ears or spotted noses. maybe it could be a wolf-dog lol like Balto.
my actual fursona!! due to fur (it's actually fleece!) limitations, my actual fursona wasn't made this time lol
inspired by my recent werewolf persona ref i drew for a friend, I took to thingiverse and printed out a wolf base, because for the love of all things good this project would be BUSTED if i had to make a foam base.
for those who are unfamailar with fursuit making, theres 2 options ( that i know of at least ) for making the base of your furhead, the thing you'll put fur on and place ya head into: you can create a "bucket" out of foam, that your head sits in, and you sort of sculpt and add foam onto the bucket base to create an animal head. Or, if you have a 3d printer, you can print out a base! I already suck really bad at cutting cuz i have zero patience, so I've always gone with 3d printing! even tho the base took a total of like. 30 or 40 hours to print all the parts, it was worth it, cuz I would probably made an non-symmetrical base lol. For the ears however and padding on the inside of the base, I used foam for cushiness.
a face that's seen some thangs...
also, this base had a moveable jaw, so i can emote!!! if u wanna print it, check it out here on thingiverse! so with the base fully assembled, I put upholestry foam on the inside so my face wouldn't be smashed against hard plastic and also for fitting purposes. ( fur heads are big!!! ) i also put an elastic band and bavaclava ( stolen from previous fursuit, sorry Yolk. ) for more comfortable fitting!
at this point, the fur base could now sit on a mannequin head, and now I could do the silly part, which i personally call, saving for dinner, as you wrap half the fur base in ... that plastic.. wrap you use for putting over food.. wait. how do you spell it. cuz i call it sher-ran wrap which sounds. wrong. google save me.
oky i wasn't far off. saran wrap. inresting. anyways, if u dont know how fursuit making works, you are probably wondering WHY it sounds like im saving plastic for dinner, which im not, i already have mircoplastics in my system, thx u. the plastic wrap will go around half the fur base and then you will tape it down, creating THIS horror movie looking thing.
THE HORRROORRR!!!!!!
basically, this is how you make a sewing pattern for the fur you are going to put on the base of the head. I didn't get a picture of it here, but you draw on the tape where you want certain patterns of fur, say for example, I drew a small circle above the eye to make an eyebrow, then, when I cut the tape off of the head, all you have to do is lay it flat, and you have your pattern for the fur! also, unless the pattern is asymmetrical, and different on either side of the face, we only need to make a pattern for half of the face, because if the pattern is symmetrical or the same on both sides, we have our pattern for the other side as well! just remember to flip the pattern when ur cutting fur..... ( spoiler alert i messed up sereval times because i didn't flip the pattern. ;-; )
after like, a week of cutting fur, mostly a week because it was overwhelming for how many patterns i had to cut out of fur, I got to sew all the pieces together!
the sewing also took like a good 5 days to do. the shit i get myself into. also like to note if u wanna get into this, hand sew the face pieces! i know its a LOT but if you machine sew the face, a lot of thread will be visible! also, the sewing part takes a lot of patience, because if u want good results, you have to go slow wit it.
after looping try again tomorrow by liana flores like 500 times, all the fur was sewn together, and i felt like a skinwalker sewing it all the together to make one big pile of, face. skin. fur. anyways! the last part is to hot glue the fur onto the face, which also has to be done slowly and patiently! in the end tho, seeing all the work you lost like 3 sewing needles over, stabbed ur fingers 10 times, and ACTUALLY burnt ur fingers 2 times with a hot glue gun, it can be very rewarding.
at time of writing, it looks alot better ( and more finished lol ) than this, but i didn't feel like going to my art room and taking a photo.
which brings us to almost present day! things i haven't yet really taken a picture of is a neck fluff, in the form of a donut shape that goes around my neck, inspo of Starberry! super cool fursona :33 I also tried making glasses for it today, but it didn't look right imo, so now i have comically large circle glasses on my desk lol.
anyways, i believe that's it for my fursona project! I'll make a proper ref sheet for them when I'm done, cuz I'm adding to the character as I go! who knows, maybe the final furhead will have glasses or some wild hair or whatever! lol. as for names however, I'm tied between Coco and Bingo--leaning more towards Coco tbh. cute name for a cute. dog, wolf, canine thing. i'll never settle on a proper species lol for any fursona i might make. why be fixed to a certain species? take the cute parts of a dog and have the cool patterns of a wolf.
i mean, this also happened with Yolk, my previous fur head. She's a dragon! but she doesn't have scales, and my mom said she thought it was a bear! which u know, im not even mad lol. really, the only dragon parts Yolk has is her whiskers, small little stubby horns and small wings. She's based on eggs and terroizes local chicken farmers by sitting in the coops and gossiping with the hens. Weird ass dragon, but she's a dragon.
thats enough of my mumbling! here to say, if u wanna do this! go in with patience and also do ur research first! even b4 my first fursuit, I've done a lot of research on how to make these. I reccommend this site for tutorials and general know how, and I reccommend this yt channel for more tutorials! both of them have a lot more time doing this stuff than me, and I do not reccommend you follow this whole post on how to make a furhead. I actually strongly wish against you using my post as a guide. I put chickenwire in a fursuit. don't follow me.
anyways, if u reading this, ur either one of my friends irl or you are a VERY VERY cool person and I appreaicate that you took the time to read this. thx u!! have an awesome day (^w^).

The art with a speical frog water mark and "angst-dealer" underneath it are my artfight attacks I've done! If you haven't heard of artfight and you love to draw lots of characters, I highly recommend trying it out in July!
